WHAT WAS JUST ANNOUNCED?
On Wednesday, October 7, 2020 we announced that Bartell Drugs has agreed to sell to. Rite Aid.
WHY DID BARTELLS DECIDE TO SELL?
Over the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult for a mid-sized drugstore chain to operate profitably due to the many changes in the pharmacy world. Business taxes increased and then the pandemic arrived, creating even stronger headwinds. With these challenges, we knew there was a need to do something to re-shape Bartell’s future.
For months now, we have carefully considered the best way to move forward for you, our customers and our employees.
WHAT IS CHANGING?
Nothing now. The acquisition must be approved by financial and regulatory agencies. We don’t expect that will happen until December.
Even after the sale closes, we are thrilled that the Bartell name and heritage will remain! We expect you, as well as our 1,700 employees, to see little or no change in our 67 stores for some time to come. In fact, the change may be hardly noticeable as you will continue to benefit from having our ongoing pharmacy care and support with the same friendly teams and still enjoy our other unique products and services.
WHY DID WE SELL TO RITE AID?
We want you to know that we are excited this agreement will allow Bartell’s to serve you for many years to come. This is an excellent opportunity with Rite Aid who wants us to continue to do what we do best, to serve you in the “Bartell” way. Since George H. Bartell Sr. founded Bartell Drugs 130 years ago.
We are confident Rite Aid is the best choice. They have a management team with a fresh vision of how drugstores can best serve health care needs. Of our many options, their strategy and vision align best with our Bartell values and will allow Bartell Drugs to continue to do what we do best, serve our community.
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR EMPLOYEES?
Rite Aid is going to continue to operate our stores and distribution center and our employees should see little to no change foreseeable future. We will consider everyone on a level playing field between Rite Aid and Bartell’s. There will be opportunities to interview for positions.
WILL PRODUCTS AND SERVICES BE CHANGING?
Details are still being worked out and nothing will change until the sales is concluded sometime in December. Rite Aid has no desire to change the relationship we’ve built in the community.
